Canals in Copenhagen
Copenhagen, like many other European cities, has many canals. The name of the city means Merchant's Harbor. So the city has always had a close connection to water and commerce. So it's canals are not a surprise. Canals were used to transport goods before railroads existed.
Although canals are not important now for commerce, they make an excellent way to tour the city. While in Copenhagen, we combined a walking tour with a canal tour.
The canal pictured here passes by some of the homes where Hans Christian Anderson lived. He never owned his own house. He would rent a room in this area, between his many foreign trips.
