Little Mermaid

The bronze statue of the Little Mermaid or "Den Lille Havfrue" is a popular attraction in Copenhagen, Denmark. The small statue was unveiled in 1913 as a tribute to Hans Christian Anderson. It is only about 1.25 m (4 ft) high. We walked to it from the pier where our ship docked.
Hans Christian Anderson published the fairy tale of the Little Mermaid in 1837. The original story differs greatly from the Disney version. Hans Christian Anderson was not born in Copenhagen, but lived here in between his many trips.
Copenhagen is the largest city in Denmark. It is located on Sjaelland, an island east of the Danish mainland. The city itself has about 500 000 people, but the area around it has over 3 million.
